How Long do Veneers Last?

If you are trying to decide whether or not veneers are right for you, you might be wondering, “how long do veneers last?” This is an important factor when considering the value of your investment. At Hicks Dental Group in Prescott, AZ, we understand that you want to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. Read on to learn more about veneers and what you can do to make them last as long as possible.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth-shaped porcelain that are custom made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile. Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile. They can often be alternatives to crowns and the ideal solution in treating many dental conditions. As with most dental restorations, veneers are not permanent and may someday need replacement.

What Issues can Veneers Fix?

  • Discoloration
  • Wear and tear
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Gaps
  • Worn down enamel

How Can I Increase the Longevity of My Veneers?

Taking proper care of your veneers will go a long way in ensuring they give you a beautiful smile for years to come. Here are some tips for taking care of porcelain veneers:

  1. Keep them clean. It is just as important to care for your veneers as it is to care for your natural teeth. Keep up with proper oral hygiene—brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. Veneers are pretty tough and can handle the pressure of brushing and flossing, just be sure to choose a non-abrasive toothpaste (gel toothpastes are generally safe) and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Poor oral hygiene can also lead to gum disease and gum recession, which may expose the borders of veneers leaving them susceptible to chipping or detaching.
  2. Avoid hard food or chewing on objects. While veneers are tough, you still need to watch what you’re eating or chewing on. Certain foods like hard candies, ice, and meat on the bone can cause chipping. Chewing on objects like pens or using your teeth to open packages can also cause your veneers to chip.
  3. Use a mouthguard. If you play contact sports or if you suffer from bruxism, be sure to wear a mouth guard to protect your pearly whites!
  4. Visit the dentist regularly. Your dentist here at Hicks Dental can help you avoid gum and mouth infections that can adversely affect the quality of your veneers. We can also identify any problems such as chips, cracks, or deteriorating bonds between your veneers and your teeth early before it’s too late to fix them.
