22 Feb Common Misconceptions about Dentures
Most people associate dentures with the elderly, but many younger men and women also wear dentures to replace their missing teeth. There are many common misconceptions about dentures, some of which include:
- Dentures mean no more dentist visits. False! While dentures are excellent for replacing teeth, your dentist will still need to see you biannually to make sure that your dentures are fitting properly and that your mouth and gums are healthy. Implants supporting the denture should be examined and cleaned on a regular basis.
- Dentures are ill-fitting and will fall out frequently. False! Dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth. They will sit properly on the gums and are made to appear similar to natural teeth, so they are very discreet. Implants can be used to stabilize and secure a denture.
- Dentures do not require as frequent of cleanings as natural teeth. False! Dentures can still form tartar and will become less comfortable if they are not properly cared for (American College of Prosthodontics, 2017). It is essential to clean your dentures in order for them to be long-lasting and to reduce the risk of periodontal disease. It is important to maintain the supporting implants, so they can provide retention and support for your denture.
